  14.                   FOR RESTORATION OF NASA's HRMS SETI PROJECT

  17.         The following message was faxed to me today by Arthur C. Clarke from
  18.     his home in Sri Lanka.  This is in response to our recent communications
  19.     concerning the launch of an international public appeal to restore
  20.     funding for NASA's High Resolution Microwave Survey (HRMS) SETI Project.
  21.     Arthur has given me permission to reproduce his message to The British
  22.     Interplanetary Society:

  32.         I am deeply distressed to learn that the work of the S.E.T.I.
  33.     Institute is no longer to be funded by the United States Government.
  34.  
  35.         One of the most important of all philosophical questions is whether
  36.     there are other intelligent lifeforms in the universe with whom we may
  37.     one day make contact.
  38.  
  39.         The work of the S.E.T.I. Institute is far too important to be
  40.     allowed to drop, but as it is for the benefit of every country in the
  41.     world, we should all support it in any way we can.
  42.  
  43.         I would therefore suggest that the British Interplanetary Society
  44.     should lead the support from this country, and am arranging for a cheque
  45.     to be forwarded to you for this purpose.
